Eleven Minutes: Paulo Coelho

In this piece, Coelho deals with an intense topic in an immense way, it talks about several taboos like sexuality, prostitution and pain & pleasure but in a way that it doesn’t feel awkward, in fact it teaches us so much about the topic, not only about its pleasures but also about its sacred nature.

The book asks very important questions:

What really is dignity?

Can sex be sacred?

What is the true meaning of love?

Can pain give us pleasure?

While answering these questions, the book takes us on a journey with Maria, as she comes out of her shell, her home, a small town in Brazil and ends up working as a prostitute in Geneva. Here she finds the meaning of life and also a great deal about her ‘inner light’ when she meets Ralf Hart.

One needs to read the book to understand what’s really inside it. Also because, as we know, Coelho’s booke all hold a different meaning for every individual.

At the end I would just say that it’s a must read if you have any questions regarding the topic and more…and also know the meaning of the title Eleven Minutes.

Some quotes worth sharing:

“When I had nothing to lose, I had everything. When I stopped being who I am, I found myself.”

“That is the true experience of freedom- having the most important thing in the world without owning it.”

Happy Reading😊

Turtles All the Way Down

Once in a while , we all need books to refresh our minds from the ongoing turmoil of our own reality. And the best way is by reading and i had the pleasure of reading John Green’s new novel , Turtles all the way down and i somehow connected to the protagonist , Aza Holmes , as we have so many things common .

Here is a short summery via Goodreads:

Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis.

Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.

In his long-awaited return, John Green, the acclaimed, award-winning author of Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars, shares Aza’s story with shattering, unflinching clarity in this brilliant novel of love, resilience, and the power of lifelong friendship.

Aza has this issue , umm I don’t know how to describe it. She has a spiral of thought that tighten everytime she try to be a normal person. she feels that she isn’t connected to her reality and to keep herself sane , she creates a small wound on her fingertip but then the spiral acts and she is again tensed about a billion things. She and Daisy are best friends but in secret , daisy is kind of tired with the bs Aza goes through and genuinely wants to help but can’t because Aza herself is caught up in the tight spiral of her life.

Now why is the book names Turtles all the way down is because Daisy had been told a story about how the earth sits on a turtle and that turtle is again on another giant turtle.

It’s a light , heat warming book and really sweet and funny and I myself got so many quotes from this book. My favorite are:

“Break hearts , not promises”

“You remember your first love because they show you , prove to you , that you can love and be loved , that nothing in this world is deserved except for love, that love is both how you become a person and why.”

There isn’t anything too deep but es it would send you thinking about your spiral of thoughts and if you ever had something. How I relate to Aza is because she is that same socially awkward person like me. I may have had my own spiral a few time back but I’m good at this moment. Aza is trying so hard but sometimes things are either out of your hand or in your hand and i feel , if there were to be another world she exits, she would conquer her fears. Also , she and Davis are sooo cute together and the fact that Davis is also a deep thinker like her but sadly her issues came in their way. I would have loved to see them together ❤

Do read Turtles All The Way Down , by John Green and tell me in the comments how you felt it was or maybe by even hitting that little gold star ! Until next time !

Six of Crows

Hello peeps..I know it’s been quite a while since I posted. I have been busy with my final year at college , preparing for admissions and getting a job (literally) but in midst of all this I was busy reading one of the famous books Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

Here a short summery via Goodreads :

Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)Criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker has been offered wealth beyond his wildest dreams. But to claim it, he’ll have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist:
Break into the notorious Ice Court
(a military stronghold that has never been breached)
Retrieve a hostage
(who could unleash magical havoc on the world)

Survive long enough to collect his reward
(and spend it)

Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get the job done – and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable – if they don’t kill each other first.

Okay so first of all , the book is basically based on some weird time period where the world has different names like Ravaka , Ketterdam , etc. Kaz Brekkar steals everyone heart in a very different way ; he is always prepared for what’s to come , has contacts and most importantly he has a crew who are unique in their own way. But Kaz also has a very dark past , which is slowly revealed as the story progresses  and he speaks about it to only Inej Ghafa/The Wraith . She is a Suli girl , very beautiful , a captive at the House of Exotics , who also has a tormented past but Kaz saves her and a little spark somehow happens between them. It’s at the end of the book that Kaz realizes his feelings for Inej. She is called the Wraith because she is an expert at defending herself and no one can actually sense her presence. She is that awesome ! I love how the author describes Inej. Also , in the end , Inej takes a vow to seek revenge on sex traffickers, as she herself was traded to the House of Exotics.  There is Jesper , who is a Grisha Fabrikator but no one knows about it as they know him for his pearl studded revolver and a rifle at his back. and speaking of Grisha , Nina Zenik , a Heartender , with a different level of beauty and smartness , compassion etc etc. They all first attempt to break Matthias Helvar , one of those soldier trained to find Grishas . And he was the one who finds Nina and they both love each other so much but can’t confess because Matthias is a true soldier of his own country and respects it ( but in the end.. just wait for it) and Nina has pure hatred for Matthias’s kind cause they torment all the Grishas they find . But these two have a very strong history.

Now Kaz has been given an impossible task and he and the other 5 (the 6th one is Wylan Van Eck , son of Merchant Van Eck , who send Kaz to the Ice Court to retrieve the scientists who has unleashed the dangerous drug ) . Al these 6 travel and face the dangers but their plan goes horribly wrong in so many ways… I was , at those points , just staring at the lines continuously not believing what I have just read . The book is that good. You can also feel the relationship shifts between Kaz & Inej , Nina & Matthias and Jesper & Wylan ( I know right ! They flirt and I was like “boys get some room !”)

The hype of this book is true and it’s an understatement when i say it’s only a one time fun read. Heel , I would read this book any other day. It’s that good. Kaz , 17 and yet a mastermind. Inej , 16 and yet an amazing fighter. Nina , beauty with brains and powers. Matthias , 18 yet bold and respectful . Jesper , with his huge secret and yet the awful addiction of gambling and finally Wylan , whose father is ashamed of him but he is much more than just his son who can’t write ( kindly read to know what all amazing things he did !)

They all are unique in their own ways , have a past of their own and yet they fight for themselves and what they love : money and justice and hence that’s why they are Six of Crows cause crows doesn’t have manner 😉

Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read . Must Read .

Make sure to like and comment if you have read this book ! I’m in deep awe and have ordered the sequel too ! Just couldn’t get over the ending ( it’s still in my brain !)

Happy Reading

Letters from an Indian Summer- Sidharth Dasgupta

A combination of a love story and a travelouge- what else could a die-hard romantic wanderer in me ask for?

An Indian photographer and a French artist meet serendipitously on a trip and eventually fall in love over the course of conversations and travels.

As Arjun and Genevieve travel from one city to another, they make us fall in love with not only the story but also with the cities which are described in detail and to their real essence.

“December and Delhi are a perfect combination.”

The language is poetic and soulful and pushes one to believe in the cosmic powers and spirituality.

Though the ending is a bit predictable but the book is overall an experience in itself.

One yearns for Arjun and Genevieve just like they both yearn for each other, not only through long distances and time but also through their heart-touching letters which can remind anyone of their own love story.

On a personal note, I think Sidharth Dasgupta is the best new age Indian writer I have read till now and I can only wish to write the way he does.

Happy Reading 🙂

Books, Reading

OMG ! I have been desperately waiting to write a review about this book because this book has officially become my Holy Grail of Sci-fi novels. Man , the amount of imagination and reading lines so many times so i could register the movements of the characters. Damn !

I will be honest when I say , I had no clue about the book until I came across a page stating 18 best book to movie adaptations coming this year and i saw Ready Player One by Steven Spielberg and i was like ” It has to have something amazing for such a great director of our time to make this movie ” and so i researched more about the book and the author Ernest Cline and this is only his debut novel ! Another reason why I wanted to read the book because it’s rare for a debut novel to be adapted into a film by such an accomplished director. And so i placed and order et Voila..

Major reason I chose to read a book heavy on Sci-fi was because I myself am planning to write and i needed inspiration and truth to be told , It’s flowing and I may be starting soon on that.

So , Here is the summary of Ready Player One via Goodread:

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

My thoughts ? This book is only for those who can really expand their imagination (I myself plan to read it once more as soon as I get some free time). It consists of everything related o the 80s and boy, I had no clue but thanks to the author , it’s been described pretty well. There are reference of books, movies and mostly video games. I haven’t so far come across any book which can perfectly describe the action of the main character so minutely. I mean, the smallest of the detail is described and nothing is left out.

So Wade Watts is living with his aunt and some other families in a trailer which is on top of a stack of trailers. It’s 2044 and things are bad hence, the stacked trailers. Earth has gone through some rough times and in conclusion , the air is horrible and people poor and so on …describing a bad reality where everyone escapes it via the OASIS. Now , OASIS is more than just a game. It’s basically everything . Education , entertainment , fun, etc etc..But all this changes when the death of OASIS creator Jim Hallidey and he announces a treasure hunt set in OASIS , with the treasure being millions of dollars and an unlimited access to anywhere to OASIS, basically allowing the winner to take in the role as Halliday’s avatar , Anorak .

The book is pretty intense and would be more loved by a video game lover or a more serious nerd than me but what i liked about this book is that even if you are unaware of the 1980s pop culture , Cline doesn’t disappoint you , rather he explains then all very well and I bet you would start googling the names of all the games , movies , books.

Plus , this book conveyed a very serious message that i felt everyone should follow or atleast need to know : Never neglect your reality. Don’t spend all your time on virtual machines like phones . laptops, games and rather face the harsh reality of life. If you just let it go , it wouldn’t affect you in any way and when experience something , you grow out of it, no matter how bad that experience is because nothing lasts forever. This was told by Halliday when he was instructing Wade/Parzival as he said that he shouldn’t make OASIS his reality. This line knocked some sense into me actually.

Anyways , on the sidelines , Wade had Aech, Art3mis , Daito and Shoto with him as they all obtained the First Key . But there also exists IOI aka Innovative Online Industries , who wants to make profit out of the OASIS and literally cheats it’s way into obtaining all the keys. There is some pretty sweet action in the book to and mark my words , it’s described in an amazing way so it’s a treat to action/nerd lovers.

This book was beyond average when it comes to designing the whole scenario and it was quite tough to concentrate too. But , I did and hence the review is served to you..

And now the movie is also arriving at a theater near you on March 30 , 2018 . I just hope I have no exams because March is one awesome month with so many amazing movies !!!!

Soooooo, do read. I mean it certainly tests your imagination skills and the book may not be for everyone. I can surely say that. Only those can read who have a strong concentration and a very vivid imagination. But its a fun book to read and today only i got to know that Mr.Cline is planning to release a sequel *Silently crying and dancing in a corner ;)*

Get you hands on this 2011 debut Ernest Cline novel and be sure to hit a like and speak you mind off.

Good Night ❤

Looking For Alaska

Sorry for taking a tiny break. I had TOEFL and some family issues but I’m back with another book review (*screaming loudly*) and this book kinda changed my perspective and solidified my earlier decision to forgive those people who had created a shit storm in my life. Here’s a short summery via Goodreads:

51r+bJu6FYL._SX324_BO1,204,203,200_.jpgBefore. Miles “Pudge” Halter is done with his safe life at home. His whole life has been one big non-event, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave “the Great Perhaps” even more (Francois Rabelais, poet). He heads off to the sometimes crazy and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young. She is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart. Then. . . .

After. Nothing is ever the same.

Okay So Miles love Alaska (she chose that name btw) and he is helplessly in love with her while he is *kinda dating* Lara , a Romanian. These 3 , along with Chip Martin and Takumi form a group of good friends who drink and smoke together. But there comes an incident which change everyone’s life and i don’t wanna give away the spoiler . There is this unexpected turn of events and Miles feel that now he needs to discover the Great Perhaps. There was one thing which bothered Alaska:

“How will I ever get out of this labyrinth?” as per quoted by Simon Bolivar

In a layman language , how to get out of this labyrinth of suffering ?

It hits home , you know , cause i have some personal sufferings going on and reading this book , i was able to get over 50% of it. It’s simple: forgiveness. You forgive others and others will ultimately forgive you. We all have hopes and dreams and energy to be reckless and our parents would say “trying to be overconfident” and shit. But do they know that this enthusiasm is contagious and once one get’s infected , it’s there for life. That enthusiasm doesn’t die. It’s merely transferring and will go on forever and it’s a very beautiful thing.Forgiveness is the simple answer to everything. Forgive others with your heart and soul because within themselves , they forgive you too. We all screw up our lives and blame other but it all takes a pure forgiveness to resolve it.

I would highly recommend this book to all 16+ readers out there. This debut novel by John Green is beyond words and i hope i get to read more amazing books like this one. John Green, you are a fucking master of teenage and YA Psychology !

Do read Looking for Alaska , 2005- debut novel and like and comment your views and heart out 😉

Goodnight and Happy Reading                                                                                                              Urvashi ❤

The Themis Files

SO , of lately , my parents have been pressuring me to keep on reading books in order to avoid me binging on my regular TV shows. Sweet of them. In November itself I have ordered 5 books and I’m not ashamed cause i can afford it. That was mean :P. anyways , The Themis Files series was on my wishlist for sometime and i finally go my hands on it. Here is a short summary via Goodreads:

25733990.jpgA girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand.

Seventeen years later, the mystery of the bizarre artifact remains unsolved—its origins, architects, and purpose unknown. Its carbon dating defies belief; military reports are redacted; theories are floated, then rejected.

But some can never stop searching for answers.

Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top secret team to crack the hand’s code. And along with her colleagues, she is being interviewed by a nameless interrogator whose power and purview are as enigmatic as the provenance of the relic. What’s clear is that Rose and her compatriots are on the edge of unraveling history’s most perplexing discovery—and figuring out what it portends for humanity. But once the pieces of the puzzle are in place, will the result prove to be an instrument of lasting peace or a weapon of mass destruction?

As a child, Rose Franklin made an astonishing discovery: a giant metallic hand, buried deep within the earth. As an adult, she’s dedicated her brilliant scientific career to solving the mystery that began that fateful day: Why was a titanic robot of unknown origin buried in pieces around the world? Years of investigation have produced intriguing answers—and even more perplexing questions. But the truth is closer than ever before when a second robot, more massive than the first, materializes and lashes out with deadly force.

Now humankind faces a nightmare invasion scenario made real, as more colossal machines touch down across the globe. But Rose and her team at the Earth Defense Corps refuse to surrender. They can turn the tide if they can unlock the last secrets of an advanced alien technology. The greatest weapon humanity wields is knowledge in a do-or-die battle to inherit the Earth . . . and maybe even the stars.

Firstly , those who can imagine a scene happening along with the story can catch up well with the books because everything is in a dialogue format. No direct story. There are interviews ( mostly) , news reports , military logs etc etc. No direct story. So that’s what made these book attractive because they were so different from what I’ve read.

Secondly , it’s not your regular alien invasion. These are 20-something feet robots made of God knows what metal and posses some other level energy. Another reason why to love this series.

Thirdly , there are a few characters. Not like a 100. Just 10 major characters.( I didn’t count. Just made an assumption). And it hasn’t been revealed till the end who is the main interviewer is , although he reveals about his past to Rose while he is dying ( NOT GONNA TELL ANYTHING MORE !) I always imagined him as Mr. Reyes from Person Of Interest( another must see TV Show. Really Awesome !!!). Mr.Reyes can make anything happen and so does this interviewer. Anyways , so the first book pretty much tells about the discovery of all the body parts of Themis (the robot is recognized in the middle of the book) and then there is a huge setback in the middle and end (Not going to give spoiler but SOMEONE COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD !!!!)

There are 2 pilots who can control Themis. Kara , a military pilot who is able to control the hands and Vincent Couture , a linguist , who can control the lower portion but the design of Themis is such that the pilot’s knees must be reversed. Weird , I know. Couldn’t imagine that happening :P. These two later fall in love and marry. But sadly Alyssa , a geneticist , becomes successful in bringing an off spring into this world about which Kara and Vincent has no idea. In the end , a Earth Defense Corp is setup by the UN to defend Earth from the future attacks.

Book 2 is majorly about the invasion of the other robots across the world, starting with London , where Themis is successful in destroying the robot and discovering the aliens within. But the robot has already killed 4 million people by releasing a deadly gas. But 150,000 were not killed because they had alien DNA. Soon , Rose , Alyssa( who is still has guards around her cause she can’t be trusted) and the main interviewer try to find why. But the a robot appears 2 miles away from the headquarters . Not gonna say the last bit cause i get emotional. Anyways , the child of Kara and Vincent is recovered and she is able to operate the themis so that’s a really happy part. Oh , there is Mr.Burns (he suggested it ) who is suspicious af but he is the descendant of Themis’s race so he happens to know a lot !!!

This book is strong on science and perfectly defines the sci-fi genre. It has the perfect amount of everything and it keeps one at the edge of the seat because you never know what’s gonna happen next ! A perfect debut novel by Sylvain Neuvel and I’m eagerly waiting for the 3rd book , Only Human , releasing on May , 2018.

A Must read definitely ! Also do vote for it at the 9th Annual Goodreads Awards. !!!

So grab your edition and let’s chat ! Do read THE THEMIS FILES series , By Sylvain Neuvel cause it is un-put-downable.

Happy reading , Urvashi !

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.                                                                 (Goodreads)

Before I gush about this book , let me tell you that I’m in support of the LGBT group. This was my first book from the prospective of  a gay character and all i can say is that he’s supper adorable and totally in love with this guy BLUE , about whom he has no idea except he studies in his college as well.

Simon can’t just come out in front of his parent because for his parents , everything new he does is surprising for them. I get that cause my parents are the same . But then my parents aren’t so cool as his . LOL ! Anyways he has 3 best friends Nick , Leah and Abby. Martin is the guy who gets to know that Simon is gay by “accidentally” reading his mails to Blue and hence Martin is my not so favorite character because he does something even more embarrassing to Simon. But what really get’s one going is how Simon and Blue , having no idea who they are , are falling for each other. It’s just too adorable.

You know at least Simon has friends with whom he can share things and hang out or whatever but to come out was a big deal and honestly they said one thing correct:

Even straight people need to come out

The more awkward it is , the better.

Well , true that cause we have our own secrets and they have to come out eventually. But what’s good about this book is that there is this flow where Simon is experiencing something new in every chapter and by reading his mails , one can definitely see the sparks flying . Just imagine what happens when they actually meet in real life ( not giving serious spiolers but damnnn they are in LOVE !)

Simon VS The HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA is now being adopted into a motion picture titled “Love , Simon” starring my favorite Nick Robinson as Simon Spier and will be releasing in 2018.

Do read and let me know how you like it !

Love , Urvashi ❤

A new book review !!! This one was fast as it had illustrations and story. The books is new in the way of the concept and art. Here’s the synopsis:

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Sometimes in life , there are moments that you want to suppress and let them fade away into nothingness because it hurts too much to actually live them again and experience the feels and everything. I had “successfully” let some memories fade away until i read Nicola Yoon’s novel EVERYTHING,EVERYTHING and I’m not okay now. It’s just the story has overwhelmed me in so may ways that i want to sit and cry for hours but being a 21 year old , you really have to be a strong headed person. I love Maddy and Olly and yes they have a happy ending regardless of everything they went through but they made through it and now they are together and that matters. Sometimes in life you’ll know that love can make you do so many unreasonable things. The book has some AMAZING QUOTES !!!!

“You are not living if you’re not regretting “

“Into all lives a little turbulence must fall”

and my personal favorite :

“Love can kill”

Good  night,

VAMPIRE ACADEMY : Not a cliche story for sure

What do you instantly think when you hear Vampire/Vampyre ? Me…..TWILIGHT ! Because Twilight has created this clique of “Vampire are mainstream and only love blood ” that people would often just run away and don’t look at other awesome Vampire related books like House Of Night , Vampire Diaries and many more I wouldn’t have heard of. anyways , back to Vampire Academy…

Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth’s magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires—the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa’s best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.

After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir’s Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger…and the Strigoi are always close by.

Rose and Lissa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard down, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever…

I have read all the 6 books on my Kindle , taking about a month and a half and i saw the only movie some years back. To say , Vampire Academy is a pretty okay-ish novel , not so exciting though but the best part is that there isn’t some gory blood sucking scene described. What actually amazed me is about how the author , Richelle Mead , successfully created another world for the vampire lovers. This book will surely be loved by those hardcore vampire/goth lovers but honestly , I wasn’t much into it. So…Not a big review cause it was a lack luster book to be honest.

Anyways you guys do give me your views if you happen to read the series and yes….follow us on Instagram @scripturient_for_life and give a like for the recent posts !

Good Night,
